Qualities of New Orleans Jazz Music

Qualities of New Orleans Jazz Music

Jamn right, damn right! We all miss getting together to play, gig, jam & dance. We are getting close to that, so why not reconnect and dust off our jazz insights? We invite you to explore the marvelous qualities that are embedded in the New Orleans jazz tradition and how they persist in later jazz styles.

This event will combine the best of a live concert, lecture and opportunity to ask questions. We’ve invited Dennis Lichtman and a wonderful 6 piece band to host this event live from New York City.

Why?

At the Mississippi Delta, in the South of the United States, in New Orleans – that’s where Jazz was born! And that’s where until today, a really specific kind of traditional jazz music is being played in the homes of the people, on the streets, in the bars. This music is energetic, fun, different every single time, and most importantly – it’s incredibly communicative. It’s a group effort, and played together in very specific ways. We would like to take you on a journey to (re)discover this beautiful traditional music, to be inspired, to reconnect and to jam!

What to expect?

Dennis and his band will play a LIVE concert from NY city. Next to the concert and lecture we will provide the opportunity for Questions and Answers. We’ll take advantage of this live and interactive format in Zoom.

  • 8pm – Session 1 Introduction to New Orleans Jazz: What is this music? Where does it come from? How is it played together? What makes this early jazz so great?
  • 9pm – Session 2 More advanced, in-depth exploration of specific techniques and tools which we can borrow from this early jazz music, for making our music come alive in both jam sessions and stage performance.

As a follow-up, there will be on- and offline workshops, to dive deeper into the topics touched during the first online concert. More info TBA.

For who?

Everybody that’s interested in swing jazz music. In the first place musicians, but also dancers and jazz lovers will enjoy this lecture and concert!

Session 1 is understandable for everyone,

Session 2 requires deeper musical insights.

But of course, everyone is welcome for both sessions.
