St Louis Blues, een versie live uit de Savoy Ballroom door Ella Fitzgerald en haar big band. The Savoy aka ‘the Home of Happy Feet’, was de allerbelangrijkste plek voor het ontstaan en populariseren van de Lindy Hop. Tot wel 4000 mensen per nacht konden hier in Harlem NYC gaan ‘clubben’ op deze aanstekelijk swing jazz muziek. De bezoekers waren vooral zwarte en Afrikaans-Amerikaanse dansers en liefhebbers maar – uitzonderlijk tijdens de segregatie – er kon ook een wit en dus gemengd publiek binnen. Dit was helmaal niet het geval voor de bekendere Cotton Club waar zwart cliënteel de club niet kon betreden. Ella werd beroemd in de Savoy toen ze met Chick Webb en zijn orkest mocht meezingen als 19 jarige.

Up to 4000 people a night could go clubbing here in Harlem NYC to this infectious swing jazz music. The visitors were mainly black and African-American dancers and fans but – exceptionally during segregation – a white and thus mixed audience could also enter. This was not at all the case for the better known Cotton Club where black clientele could not enter the club.Ella became famous at the Savoy when she was allowed to sing with Chick Webb and his orchestra as a 19 year old.
